Green Service Initiative
The Green Service Initiative (“GSI”) is a collaborative
project of the Green Academy at Santa Barbara High School
and the Community Environmental Council to support and recognize
“Green” projects in our community (such projects
include: school gardens and school green space; recycling
efforts; habitat restoration projects; creek/ocean water quality
monitoring; and beach/creek/neighborhood clean-ups). The GSI
creates connections between community organizers, local experts,
college interns, local businesses, and high school students,
creating a network of thinkers, workers, and supporters. Our
experts advise community organizers on how to best achieve
their objectives, the university and college interns coordinate
and supervise work days, and the high school students provide
a work force while earning community service hours through
direct participation in service learning projects. Our goal
is to create, equip, and mobilize this network of active individuals
in order to further environmental goals in our community while
providing opportunities to grow, serve, and learn for all
involved.
How it works
1. Project organizers/coordinators contact José (GA)
or Tahara (CEC).
2. José/Tahara meet with organizer/coordinator to generate
a plan.
3. José meets with University interns, and gives specific
steps to implement the plan.
4. José distributes information to Green Clubs.
5. Green Club students choose whether or not to participate.
6. Interested Green Club members and interns show up at scheduled
time to do work as planned. Hours are logged.
7. Students are recognized at the end of the year, based on
their number of hours worked.
